Academic hoods are worn over the graduation gown to signify the degree obtained and the university of institution where the degree was awarded.

The degree is signified by the color of the velvet on the hood, which is seen on both the front and the back of the hood.

Please note that for the PhD degree, the distinctive royal blue color is used to signify the PhD itself, rather than indicating a specific discipline or field of study.

Unlike an Ed.D., which uses light blue velvet for education, a D.Sci with gold velvet for science, or a D.M.A with pink velvet for music, holders of a PhD in any field—whether science, education, or music—will have dark blue velvet on their regalia.

PhD holders who wish to highlight their specific discipline can choose to add degree color piping to their deluxe doctoral hoods or gowns. This allows them to proudly display their academic focus while maintaining the traditional royal blue color that signifies the PhD degree.
